Thierry Breton

Commissioner for Internal Market, European Commission


Thierry Breton, a computer sciences graduate of Supélec, started his career as an entrepreneur in new technologies. From 1986 to 1990, he founded and ran the Futuroscope in France, the first amusement park dedicated to science and new technologies. At the same time, he was elected first Regional Adviser, then Vice-President of the French region Poitou-Charentes. He ran several companies and served as CEO at Bull before heading Thomson Multimédia and France Télécom. From 2005 to 2007, Thierry Breton served as French Minister of Economy, Finance, and Industry before joining Harvard Business School as a Professor. In 2009, he became CEO at Atos, a function he held until 2019 when he was nominated European Commissioner for Internal Market. His portfolio includes industry, goods and services, digital, defence, space, tourism and audiovisual topics.
