Henrique Barros

President of the Institute of Public Health at University of Porto


Henrique Barros was born in Porto, in 1957. He graduated in Medicine in 1981. From 1988-89 was research fellow at the Internal Medicine department of Lund´s University Hospital. In 1991 became a Gastroenterology specialist and finished his PhD, a research on the epidemiology of viral hepatitis. He is Full Professor of Epidemiology since 1999. He led the organization of the Master Programs in Public Health (coordinator), Epidemiology, in Public Health at the University of Porto and the doctoral program in Global Public Health (program director), a joint program with University NOVA of Lisbon. He participate as Investigator and Principal Investigator in multiple national and international research projects, in areas such as clinical and perinatal epidemiology, cardiovascular, infectious and cancer diseases, which resulted in (co)authorship of more than 250 publications in international journals. He was a member of the Scientific Council for Health Sciences of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (2004-12). He was National Coordinator for Infection HIV/AIDS (2005-11). Currently, he is the President of the Institute of Public Health, University of Porto, member of the Executive Commission of the National Ethical Committee for Clinical Investigation (CEIC) and member of the Medical Sciences (MED) Scientific Committee of Science Europe. He is President of Portuguese Association of Epidemiology (2013-15) and a member of the Executive Board of the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region.
