Graduated in Industrial Engineering (1984) and PhD in Polymer Engineering in 1991.
Rector of University of Minho since 2009.
President of the Portuguese Rectors Conference since 2014.
Full Professor of the Polymer Engineering Department (DEP) of University of Minho (UMinho).
Research activity at IPC (Institute for Polymers and Composites – I3N Associate Laboratory), UMinho, developing several projects under the frame of national and European programmes, in the fields of structure development in polymer processing, non-conventional moulding techniques and tools and natural polymers.
Author of 120 refereed ISI papers, 3 books (editor) and 4 patents.
Dean of the School of Engineering of UMinho from 2005 to 2009.
Chairman of Instituto Internacional Casa de Mateus and of CEER Foundation (consortium of the Northern Portugal and Galician Universities).
Member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering.
Golden Insignia of the University of Santiago de Compostela.
Gold Medal and Honorary Citizen of Guimarães.
